Lanzhou University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, holding an important strategic position in the national higher education framework, and enjoys significant influence and a good reputation both domestically and internationally.

The university was founded in 1909 as the Gansu Law and Politics School, which was the first modern higher education institution in Northwest China. In 1928, it was expanded and renamed Lanzhou Zhongshan University. In 1946, it was renamed National Lanzhou University. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, during the adjustment of higher education institutions, it was designated as one of the country’s 14 comprehensive universities. Since the reform and opening-up, it has been successively selected for the "Project 211" and "Project 985" initiatives. In 2002 and 2004, the Gansu Grassland Ecology Research Institute and Lanzhou Medical College were merged into and reincorporated into Lanzhou University, respectively. In 2017, it was selected as an A-class university for the construction of world-class universities. The university currently has two campuses: Chengguan and Yuzhong. Over more than 110 years of development, the university has remained committed to the western region and national development, pioneering the path of establishing a world-class university with Chinese characteristics in a less developed economic area. It has created renowned “LZU phenomena” at home and abroad, including "one department with nine academicians in Chemistry," "three generations of faculty and students bravely exploring the three poles of the earth in Geosciences," the “LZU Corps” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Longi-LZU partnership.

Following the disciplinary development strategy of "promoting humanities, strengthening science, expanding engineering, refining agriculture, and enhancing medicine," the university is focused on building a disciplinary system that is "structurally optimized, reasonably arranged, distinctly advantageous, and prominently characteristic," as well as a new disciplinary ecosystem. It was among the first institutions in China authorized to award bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees and to establish postdoctoral research mobile stations. Currently, it offers 29 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, 46 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, 6 categories of doctoral professional degrees, and 28 categories of master's professional degrees, covering 13 disciplinary categories. It is one of the independent degree authorization review units. The university hosts 23 postdoctoral research mobile stations. There are 8 national key disciplines and 2 national key cultivation disciplines. The disciplines of Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, Ecology, and Grassland Science are included in the list of world-class discipline construction. Seventeen disciplines rank in the global top 1% according to ESI, with Chemistry and Environmental Science & Ecology entering the global top 0.1%.
